Why the Mad Hatter Costume Rules
Have you seen Tim Burton’s recent version of the classic tale ‘Alice in Wonderland’? It’s a rip roaring, multi coloured, and truly wonderful film. It also features an all-star cast that includes such brilliant actors such as Helena Bonham-Carter, Johnny Depp and the hilarious Stephen Fry.
It’s Johnny Depp’s turn as the Mad Hatter that steals the show however. It’s a brilliant, visceral performance that demonstrates how fantastic the partnership of Depp and Tim Burton is. The great thing about this character is that in amongst the craziness he actually speaks a lot of wisdom.
Because I’m such a huge fan of the film I decided to dress up in the official licensed Mad Hatter costume. It looks wonderfully authentic, and includes the same colourful assortment of clothes as the one featured in the film. It also includes the trademark Mad Hatter top hat as well.
It’s hard not to act in the same way as the Mad Hatter when you put on this costume. It seems to transform you into this wonderfully eccentric character that spouts strange truths. I also found myself jumping on top of tables and chairs and singing random songs! I can now understand what actors mean when they say that a costume helps to transform them into their character.
